We are better than this.

Social media works. And quickly. Our good friend @heybrett from @sendlabs put together a memorial site for the Mount Vernon tragedy and it’s being circulated throughout social media networks and has garnered a response from all over. The site is www.wearebetterthanthis.com and its intent is not only honorable and its design wonderfully creative, but the interaction is what is most remarkable. Oftentimes people are skeptical of social media outlets because they say it compromises their privacy, it’s too time consuming, and it can be salesy or annoying. (People need to learn how to hide the applications on Facebook so people’s Farms and MafiaWars don’t always have to show up…but we digress…)

This is an example of how people can use social networking to come together in times of tragedy. It’s an outlet where a larger community can grieve, comfort one another, express their outrage and it reminds us all of what we can often take for granted. So before you tweet another reply to a celebrity you’re following or post a Facebook status about how crappy your day is going, think about how We Are Better Than This and if you want, light a candle.
