Two ears to listen, one mouth to speak
Posted October 9th, 2009My father used to say, “You have two ears to listen with and only one mouth to speak with. That means you should listen twice as much as you talk.” I find those drops of wisdom can also be true for many of today’s businesses.
Just like people, a lot of businesses like to just talk about themselves. All they want to do is tell you about me.. me.. me and what they can DO for you. That’s okay and all, heck that’s all they know how to do. But today more than ever, companies need to listen twice as much. If your company doesn’t have a good policy set in place for search engine optimization, social media and search engine marketing…you are basically putting cotton balls in your ears and saying, “la la la la.”
Search engines tell us what customers are searching for. Holy cow, what a revelation! If you knew immediately what a customer was looking for when they came into your store, wouldn’t it be easier to help them find what they need? Of course! So does your website tell the search engines the right things?
Google spider bot: “Hello… I am a google search engine spider bot. I have some users who are looking for “Timberland boots” do you have any of those?”
Website: “Well, let’s see here.. Billy Bob’s Big Boots Store. Nope. I just have Billy Bob’s Boots Store. I have boots? Is that good enough?”
Google spider bot: “Well, I am looking for boots, but I am looking specifically for Timberland boots, so I will put you here, on page 453 with Sally’s Super Fabulous Lady boots Store.”
Making sure your site is properly optimized for search engines might not seem so important, but it is the first step in listening to the millions of people out there who are shouting out what they need via search engines and social media.
