A few social media mistakes to avoid
Posted July 13th, 2010For a few years now, the social media explosion has been taking place and as small businesses cope with figuring out how it all works for them. Before you jump out and start posting away on your company’s new Facebook or Twitter account, Sarah Hartshorn of Social Media Today writes about the six social media mistakes your company should avoid.
To sum it up, the articles highlight these six mistakes to avoid:
- Stale or static content — If your last Facebook post was May 2008, you got problems.
- Combining Personal and Professional Accounts — Do you think it really is a good idea for your customers or potential customers to see you with showgirls in Vegas? Or maybe that time when you drank a little too much at a summer bbq?
- Lack of account monitoring — I am in charge of our Facebook page? Really? I haven’t checked it in MONTHS! DOH!
- Remember who you are talking too — Should I post stuff about my comic book collection on the business Facebook page? Yes, if you are a book store and probably not a strong idea if you are a credit union or bank.
- Choose your voice wisely — Let’s just have the intern post to our Facebook page, they have been with us for a month and understand completely what we are all about (dripping with sarcasm)
- Don’t “Like” or “Follow” everyone and don’t ask for everyone to “Like” or “Follow” you — Be picky. These are conversations that you want to be a part of. Social media isn’t about how many friends or followers you have, but how many conversations you want to be part of. As with an individual, you can only follow so many conversations at one time. By spreading yourself out too thin, it will make you look like you aren’t really listening to anyone.
Can you think of any other social media mistakes to avoid?
